Connect your domain

A domain is the address people use to find a site on the web. If you want your project to open at your own address, such as ar.mysite.com, you need three steps:

  1. Buy a domain.
  2. Specify the domain in the project settings on the platform.
  3. Add a DNS record for the domain at your registrar.

Which plans include a custom domain is shown on the pricing page.

1. Buy a domain

You can buy a domain from a domain registrar. There are many of them; search for "buy a domain" to find one.

2. Specify the domain in the project settings

Go to the project settings, enter your domain and click Connect Domain.

If the domain is not connected yet, you will see a message with the address for the CNAME record. Most likely it will be projects.web-ar.studio, but if you are shown a different address, use that one.

If you have already done everything as described below, the DNS is probably still updating. This can take several hours, sometimes up to a day.

3. Add the DNS record at your registrar

Add the record in your domain control panel, usually in a section called "DNS management" or "DNS zone". You don't need to change the name servers (NS records) of your domain.

If your registrar doesn't provide DNS hosting, order this service separately, or use a service that hosts DNS for free.

For a subdomain (recommended)

For example: ar.mysite.com or www.mysite.com.

  1. Open your domain control panel.
  2. Find the section for adding DNS records.
  3. Add a CNAME record for the subdomain (for example, the name ar) with the value projects.web-ar.studio, or the address shown in your project settings.

A subdomain is the simplest option. It needs one record, and your main site keeps working as before.

For the main (root) domain

For example: mysite.com without anything in front.

The DNS standard doesn't allow a CNAME record on the root domain, so many registrars won't even let you add one. You have two options:

  • An ALIAS or ANAME record. Some DNS providers offer a special record type that works like a CNAME on the root domain. It may be called ALIAS, ANAME or "CNAME flattening". If yours has it, point it to projects.web-ar.studio.
  • A subdomain plus a redirect. If there is no such record type, connect a subdomain such as www.mysite.com as described above, and set up a redirect from mysite.com to it in your registrar's settings.

Keep in mind that the project will then take over all traffic of the root domain. If your main site lives there, use a subdomain for the AR project instead.

Avoid conflicting records

A name that has a CNAME record can't have any other records. Before you add the CNAME for ar.mysite.com, delete any other records for that same name, such as an old A record or a second CNAME. Otherwise the domain won't work.

Check the connection

DNS changes can take several hours to spread, sometimes up to a day. When the record has taken effect, the domain settings of your project will show a message that the domain is connected correctly. From that moment, the project opens at your address.
